Dealogic trade finance league tables 3Q 2011

Trade finance volumes down 6% in the first nine months of 2011, as September pre-export volume recorded the highest monthly total since July 2010 and HSBC stays top of the ECA finance tables.

Global Trade Finance

Global Trade Finance volume reached $114 billion in the first nine months of 2011, down 6% from the $121.2 billion recorded during the comparable 2010 period. Volume in 3Q 2011 reached $40.4 billion, down 29% from the record $56.8 billion raised in 3Q 2010. Excluding sole-bank loans, volume reached $89.4 billion in the first nine months of 2011, marginally down from $90.9 billion during the same period in 2010.

Sector Analysis

Oil and gas companies accounted for 20% of trade finance volume in the first nine months 2011, down from 24% during the comparable 2010 period. The metal and steel sector followed with a 10% share of the market.

The metal and steel sector recorded the largest trade finance loan of 3Q 2011 with Russian Aluminum OAO’s $4.8 billion facility. The loan also represented the second largest trade finance loan of the first nine months of 2011.

Countries

Excluding sole-bank loans, Brazil and Turkey tied for the largest number of deals in the first nine months of 2011 with 23 deals each. Russia and Vietnam followed with 21 and 10 deals, respectively

ECA Guarantees

ECA guarantee volume was $10 billion in 3Q 2011, down slightly compared with $11.6 billion in the previous quarter.

Pre-export

Pre-export loan volume totalled $8.4 billion during 3Q 2011, up 145% on the previous quarter. Volume was boosted by September volume of $6 billion, the highest monthly total since July 2010.

Rankings

HSBC topped the ECA backed trade finance loan rankings with $3.4 billion, followed by BNP Paribas with $2.7 billion. BBVA topped the global trade finance ranking (including sole bank loans) with 8.6% share. BNP Paribas followed with a 7.3% share.
