Trade Finance (TF): Every export credit agency (ECA) has a slightly different remit based on the way it was set up. What makes EDC unique among its counterpart ECAs?
Stephen Poloz (SP): In comparison to many other ECAs, EDC was set up in a fairly unrestricted manner to facilitate Canadas international business. That is obviously a wide scope, but we have been able to carve out a distinct role for ourselves within that while still having space to evolve along with Canadas exporting community.
We have internationalised in the same way Canadian companies have internationalised their supply chains. A good example of this is the BlackBerry, which is produced by RIM in seven or eight different countries with robust supply chains that have built¬ in redundancies in case something goes wrong.
