Update: Multilats support Rwanda’s KivuWatt

ContourGlobal closes debt finance for its KivuWatt project converting methane from Rwanda’s Lake Kivu into electricity, but an additional MIGA shareholder loan guarantee is still to be agreed.

ContourGlobal’s (CG) ambitious plans to convert hazardous methane from the water in Rwanda’s Lake Kivu into electricity has won $91.5 million in support from multilateral organisations: the African development Bank (AfDB), the Emerging Africa Infrastructure Fund (EAIF), and Netherlands’ FMO, and a political risk guarantee from the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA).

The two-phase $142 million KivuWatt project is located in Kibuye, Rwanda and it is estimated that it will generate 100MW of electricity by 2014, which would alone exceed the country’s entire...
