In 2009 Caterpillar, the world’s largest manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, was facing several supply chain management challenges. Expecting a post-crisis improvement in the global economy and forecasting significantly increased purchase volume, Caterpillar was concerned that its suppliers might lack access to the working capital necessary for financing during an upturn.
