The importance of the capital markets for major oil producers such as Mexico's Petroleos Mexicanos (Pemex) has always been a given. But in the deteriorating financial markets of last year extra support was needed to ensure a Samurai bond arranged for Pemex managed to fly.
In this case HSBC and SMBC acted as mandated lead arrangers of the Samurai bond, a Japanese yen denominated private placement, with the funds being destined for the exploration and production development activity of the Ku Maloob Zaap offshore oilfield in the Mexican Gulf.
