Whilst factoring is still relatively new in most parts of Latin
America, a number of markets have already been through considerable
turmoil in their short history. The effects of Mexico's Peso crisis
in the mid 1990s had far reaching effects and had a major impact on
credit underwriting standards. Elsewhere, banking regulations and
restrictions on the ownership of factors has held back the
development of the industry in some markets and concern over
currency devaluation has also had an impact in some countries.
There are, however, many positives within the region and those in
the industry believe that factoring is now ready for the next stage
in its growth cycle.
Argentina
The factoring industry in Argentina went through a period of rapid
growth in the mid 1990s, going from a zero start in 1994 to $1.485
