In the last review of factoring (Trade Finance, May 2001, p34-36)
we looked at northern Europe where the main theme appeared to be
the consolidation of factors in many of the markets as a result of
changes in the banking environment, being brought about by mergers
and acquisitions. We now take a look at southern Europe where the
emphasis is more on innovation and the growth of the factoring
industry.
Italy
The market in Italy has seen a burst of growth during the last 12
months, increasing by 25% ? something quite remarkable given that
it is already a well developed market. With a total volume of a110
billion ($93.2 billion), Italy is now the third largest factoring
market in the world behind the UK and the US respectively.
